Gifts from the sea: Drone photography on the beach
Photographer: Linsey Brigman Davis
Beaches is my personal project of the shores that have a special place in my heart. Like a song that can bring back the memories ... each beach takes me back to a different stage in my life.
My journey into drone photography began earlier this year when I found my son’s drone shoved into a cabinet collecting dust. Right away, I began thinking of ways that I could shoot documentary with the drone. The idea of Beaches came to me when I began using the drone to capture my family on our 10th annual Daytona Beach vacation. The idea continued to grow once we returned home.
When I shoot with the drone, I use the same rules as I would in my regular documentary shots. I look for composition, light or shadows, ways to layer, and always asking myself, “What is interesting here?” The ocean has a voice and it has a face. I try to capture that face and that voice in my images. When I feel I've found that, those are the images that make the cut.
The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach -- waiting for a gift from the sea. - Anne Marrow Lindbergh
